A weekend in Fortin, Veracruz

Off we headed to Veracruz, a 4.5 hour drive through the mountains. Every couple of kilometers there would be shrines that families have built for people who have died on these roads. This can help you imagine the type of "highway" that we had to drive on. At one point there is about one and a half lanes going each direction so that cars can pass...my heart rate increased significantly on quite a few occasions :)

As we drove east, the scenery was amazing. Leaving the city, we passed through rolling hills of brown and green, and then through red hills (like P.E.I.). We saw goat herders and donkeys, and small little villages in the middle of nowhere - quite spectacular.

We stopped of at the Museo de l'Aqua (got lost just a little in the town, went on another dirt road and voila! It was actually more of a museum of how to reuse water, and different ways of saving water, and technologies that are available for plumbing and filtering. We had a guide that lead us through and explained all of the different stations. It was very interesting.

Back on the road. So, we had to cross the Sierra's. Quite intimidating. Down we head. There are tons of signs asking you to check your brakes and reduce your speed, and ramps that head off to the side filled with gravel just in case your brakes fail you. And then...Bienvenidos a Veracruz! Everything has changed from dry and brown to humid and lush green!

We head off to Fortin to visit Blanca's family. They are all very welcoming and we decide to head down to Cordoba (the next town over) to have a coffee in the zocalo. So, off we head. We were treated to a nice show of Mexican dancers, walked around the square (Oaxaca's is much more impressive) and then headed back to eat with Mama :)

After filling ourselves with traditional Mexican cuisine, we headed down to the hotel to sleep. Then up again and back to Blanca's for breakfast were we had some piquenitos, eggs and chicharonnes. Delicious!

Blanca wanted to show us a beautiful view off of a bridge, so we walked along the highway (literally - on the shoulder) and took some beautiful pictures. It was pretty scary actually because we were so high up. Then back on the road to come home. We left the green valleys of Veracruz to come back to the dry hills of Oaxaca!

An amazing weekend!
